Questioning Arbitrariness in Language: a Data-Driven Study of Conventional Iconicity

چکیده
This paper presents a data-driven investigation of phonesthemes, phonetic units said to carry meaning associations, thus challenging the traditionally assumed arbitrariness of language. Phonesthemes have received a substantial amount of attention within the cognitive science literature on sound iconicity, but nevertheless remain a controversial and understudied phenomenon. Here we employ NLP techniques to address two main questions: How can the existence of phonesthemes be tested at a large scale with quantitative methods? And how can the meaning arguably carried by a phonestheme be induced automatically from word embeddings? We develop novel methods to make progress on these fronts and compare our results to previous work, obtaining substantial improvements.

Cognitive iconicity: Conceptual spaces, meaning, and gesture in signed languages
Adopting the framework of cognitive grammar, I define cognitive iconicity as a special case in which the phonological and the semantic poles of a symbolic structure reside in the same region of conceptual space. One reason for the richness of iconic representation present in signed languages is that the phonological pole of signs involves objects moving in space as viewed from a certain vantage...
متن کاملArbitrariness, Iconicity, and Systematicity in Language.
The notion that the form of a word bears an arbitrary relation to its meaning accounts only partly for the attested relations between form and meaning in the languages of the world. Recent research suggests a more textured view of vocabulary structure, in which arbitrariness is complemented by iconicity (aspects of form resemble aspects of meaning) and systematicity (statistical regularities in...

T studies recognizing sign languages as full-fledged languages (Stokoe ; Klima and Bellugi ) were undertaken while the formal linguistic paradigm was evolving. If this i...
